Advent Candle Christmas Countdown Calendar
alphabetlearningalphabetlearning

Advent Candle Christmas Countdown Calendar

(0)
What’s included? This download includes x1 portrait orientation pdf to make an ‘Advent Candle Countdown Calendar’ to count down the December days from the 1st to the 24th. What’s it for? This countdown has been designed to be used for by an individual/group or class to countdown the days to Christmas together. It has been designed to be made by or with an adult - an adult leading the way with what the steps are and a child/learner helping with these as they are able. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students with additional learning needs. An older, able, pupil may be able to make this ‘with’ or ‘for’ a younger learner in a paired activity, working together. Resource Details Everything needed for the finished Advent Candle Countdown Calendar is included on the pdf. There are six main instructions and additional, detailed, information positioned next to the relevant parts to make what to do clearer. The main task is to cut along the red dotted lines to cut the candle shape out and separate the ‘flaps’ which will fold over the image (for each day) to hide it. Numbers are provided to stick onto these flaps (in order from the base of the candle to the top), or these numbers can be written by hand instead - whatever is preferred/easiest. Learners will need a pencil (to write their name), a pair of scissors, a glue stick and a small ball of Blue Tac (the size of a small marble) - this piece of Blue Tac will then be made into x24 teeny tiny balls which are used to secure the flaps closed until it is the date to be opened. Suggestions This pdf will need to be printed onto white card or it won’t be strong enough to stand up by itself. Double sided sticky tape might be a better alternative to secure the candle shape together (instead of using the glue stick). Glue/double-sided sticky tape is to be applied to the single purple strip, positioned vertically on the right hand side of the pdf. Read the six steps carefully before beginning to help make the process as easy as possible. Miniature Right AND Left hand/finger ‘pointers’ (two sets)

(0)
What is it? This download includes x6 sheets (portrait orientation) featuring TWO sets of x27 right AND left hand/finger ‘pointers’ in rainbow/skin tone colours both as solid colours and outline only. What’s it for? These are for learners to hold and use to ‘point’ to their learning - ideal to use alongside my ‘ants on apples’ set of rhymes (available in my TES shop!) /teaching-resource/ants-on-apples-x26-alphabet-rhymes-a-z-set-13118362 Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as students needing additional learning support. If you use a ‘pointer’ you can guarantee they would like to use one too! How to make it? Print onto white card, follow dotted lines to cut out each hand/pointer shape, attach a wooden lolly stick to the back with sticky tape and they’re ready to use! I kept my set in a little pot in the reading area for learners to help themselves to or you may wish for learners to have their own, maybe in their favourite colour… Important message… ANY issues with any of this please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes. Exploring concepts BIG small

Exploring concepts BIG small

(0)
What’s included? x5 pages, landscape orientation in colour to investigate the concepts ‘BIG’ and ‘small’. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years aged children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details Page 1 is a visual reference sheet which could be used for display purposes but has been designed to be used as a point of discussion about what ‘BIG’ and ‘small’ means… As a teacher/adult led discussion learners could explore what the concepts ‘big ‘ and ‘small’ mean. There are x9 pairs of images displayed on page 1, each showing items that are (when compared to each other in the ‘real world’) ‘big’ or ‘small’. Learners could first work together to identify what the big and small item is in each pair. Once the big/small item in each pair has been identified learners could go on to consider mixing up the items in the pictured pairs - e.g. if the ‘elephant’ was compared with the ‘world’ instead of the ‘mouse’ which would be big and which would be small? The images on pages 2 and 3 could be used as a matching activity for learners to think about and explore this further. Pages 2 and 3 are for learners to use to record three sets of pairs of items that are (when compared with each other in the real world) BIG or small. The BIG item in each pair is the be positioned on the right and the small item in each pair is to be positioned on the left. There are three spaces (for three pairs) on page 2 and page 3, learners could complete two pages (2 and 3!) Pages 4 and 5 display the images from page 1 ready to be cut up (dotted lines guide where to cut) and placed in pairs on pages 2 and 3 (or page 6). Learners could pair up the images as featured on page 1 (see this list of big/small pairs above) OR learners could pair the images differently. However the learners pair up the images the idea is to pair one BIG and one small item when thinking about the size of these items in the ‘real world’ and not the size of the image as pictured on these sheets. This may confuse some learners and they will really need to think about these items/images carefully where pairing a big and small image together before securing them with glue on pages 2/3/6. Page 6 provides an opportunity for learners to draw and label their own (real world) BIG and small images. Measuring length using cm (up to 25cm)

(0)
What’s included? x4 sheets, landscape orientation, pdf format. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for pupils in years one and two as well as older students who need to revisit this or students needing additional learning support. This resource may be suitable for children in the EYFS. What’s it for? This resource has been designed to give learners an opportunity to practise measuring the length of simple shapes using cm (up to 25cm). How to use it? The first page is an ‘information sheet’ - introducing learners to what a ‘centimetre’ is and what it is used for in images and words. Pages 2 to 4 (numbered 1-3) provide practical opportunity for learners to use the images of the rulers provided to carefully measure the length of each object (image) featured. Page number 1 focuses on ‘stationery’, page number 2 on ‘kitchen items’ and page number 3 on ‘tools’. Page 3 uses the vocabulary ‘longer’ and ‘shorter’ and looks at the difference (in cm) between the longest and shortest tool - which may be a new concept for some learners and so may require some support. Suggestion I would encourage learners to draw a vertical line from the end of each object to the number on the ruler above (using a pencil and ruler!) to be sure of what the total length for each item is. Important… This resource has been designed to provide learners with an opportunity to practice measuring using the images of rulers marked with cm. These rulers are illustrations of rulers and not exact centimetres. It is printed on each sheet that the ‘illustrations in this resource are not to scale’. 0 - 10 Number fan (Rainbow version)
alphabetlearningalphabetlearning

0 - 10 Number fan (Rainbow version)

(0)
What’s included? This download includes two A4, portrait pdf sheets to make number fans featuring numerals from 0 to 10. Rainbow Version. Each number is a different colour - in rainbow colour order. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. How to use this resource Number fans can be used in a variety of situations including on-the-carpet questioning with the whole class/smaller groups where pupils can show their answers instead of speaking. Number fans can be used as a personal reference resource for learners e.g. to help count and order numbers and/or cross-check the correct orientation of individual numbers if unsure when writing. Number fans can also be used for a variety of games and to accompany and involve learners during counting rhymes and songs, usable both inside the classroom and outdoors. The rainbow colours may help some learners not yet confident with number recognition, who know colours. E.g. if you ask, ‘Can you show me number 3?’ - this could be followed by ‘Can you show me number 3, the orange number? Suggestion Brightly coloured plastic keyrings (which can be easily opened by unclipping the plastic) could be ideal where you wish learners to access the contents of the ring e.g. to order the numbers. Alternatively a short loop of wool/string could be tied/untied to achieve the same effect. A standard metal keyring works well as a more permanent ‘holder’ of the contents threaded onto the ring. I recommend that each number is laminated before punching a hole and threading onto a keyring - this is included in the instructions on the pdf. Important message… ANY issues with this number fan please don’t hesitate to let me know - I am happy to make changes. Feedback of this number fan resource would be great - thank you! 2D shapes (and properties) name game

2D shapes (and properties) name game

(0)
What’s included? This download includes x2 pages, portrait orientation, in pdf format. What is it? This is a simple game for two players to reinforce 2D shape names and the number of sides each shape has. Who’s it for? This ‘2D shape name game’ resource has been designed for early years and pupils in years one and two as well as students needing additional learning support. How to use it? The game includes two boards on page 2 (one for each player) with a space for each player to write their names on the line above. All that is needed is a die (dice) and a pencil/pen (per player) to ‘tick off’ shapes (once ‘rolled’) OR /game counters/small counting objects e.g. Duplo bricks - to place on top of each shape once ‘rolled’. One die is recommended (to ‘share’) to promote turn-taking. Players take turns to roll the die. The number on the die indicates the number of sides of the shape e.g. a circle has ‘one’ side therefore if the player rolls a ‘one’ with the die the ‘circle’ can be ‘ticked off’ on the board. Alternatively a counter/‘matching 2D plastic/wooden shape’ could be placed on top of each shape on the board once the shape has been ‘rolled’. The first player to tick off (or cover up!) all 2D shapes on their board is the ‘winner’ ! Clear visual instructions are included on page 1 of this resource which the players could be encouraged to read themselves before playing the game. Brief instructions are also included at the top of page 2 (above the ‘game boards). What’s needed? One die (dice) to share or one each. Resource layout The instruction text is size 14 ‘Avenir’ font. Instructions are included on page 1, the game itself (x2 game boards) are included on page 2. Recommendations For younger players having a set of these 2D shapes out while playing this game (to look at, hold and count the sides of) would benefit learners. This PDF has been designed to print and write-on. It could be laminated and a dry-wipe pen used to enable reuse and improve durability. Chunky sized dice are much easier for younger learners to use. Foam dice are great as they are really quiet! A shallow box, e.g. half of an empty cereal box laid flat on its back with front removed (ideally lined with a piece ‘felt’ fabric to absorb sound) to roll the die into could be used to avoid dice rolling away (e.g. off a table top). This should avoid any momentum of the game being interrupted while searching for lost dice! New online service coming soon with FREE downloads (including this resource) available! What’s included? x5 sheets, portrait orientation, pdf format. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for children in the early years, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This resource has been designed to encourage learners to investigate the concept of symmetry within x6 spot/dot pictures. How to use it? The learner can explore the concept of the ‘line of symmetry’ by using a safety mirror to complete the right hand side of the B&W/colour pattern or create their own symmetrical spot/dot pattern using the blank sheet provided. Suggestion Using safety mirrors along side the activity would make a huge difference to understanding (or not) for some learners. Best to use these where they are available, Resource Details… The B&W and colour version of this resource show the same patterns (with answers) but a ‘blank’ is included for the adult/learners to create their own. Reading Common words Number names 1 - 20

(0)
What’s included? This download includes x4 sheets, all portrait orientation, pdf format. What’s it for? This activity set has been designed to give learners an opportunity to look more closely at a set of the first 100/200 high frequency words and practise seeing these words on sight while matching these words with images. This set focuses on all ‘number names’ from ‘one’ to ‘twenty’ - all words included have a matching image (of the numeral and correct number of objects). This is a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals/groups to be getting on with independently or those needing some individual 1:1 support. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for Early Years children who are learning these sounds (and words/numbers) for the first time, pupils in Year 1 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. This resource is also suitable for older learners with additional learning needs. How to use it? An adult can pre-cut along dotted lines provided and the set of x20 words (and images) can be shuffled and placed face-up on the carpet/a table top for learners to look at carefully and try to match. Resource Details… These words are all from the list of ‘common words’ to read and spell. Some are also from the from the first 100/200 high frequency word list. It is possible to ‘sound out’ ‘most’ of these words, however some are ‘tricky’. Words to sound out can be identified by a ‘white tick’, tricky words can be identified by a white ‘cross’. In the ‘word box’ at the top-right there is a coloured ‘triangle’. The colour indicates which phonics phase this word fits in with. Pink triangles indicate that the words are from ‘phase 2’, purple triangles indicate that the words are from 'phase 3’, turquoise triangles indicate that the words are from 'phase 5’ and grey triangles indicate that the words are from phase 6+. The ‘key’ at the top of each sheet also makes this colour coded system clear. Red letters indicate the tricky/irregular letters/sounds. Where individual letters are underlined - this indicates that together these (underlined) letters have one sound. Tricky words are underlined as one word instead. Each page is numbered e.g. ‘1 of 4’ - find page numbers on the lower right side of each sheet. The blue box outline colour indicates that these words are all part of the ‘number names’ set. Resource layout The simple lay out of each number bonds sum is an easy to use resource. Numbers can be written on the sheet (and wiped off if laminated) in the blank box covering the missing numbers in each number bond. The large size 50 ‘Avenir’ font makes the numbers and + sign easy to read and models the addition ‘pattern’ in a clear layout to learners. Resource 1 - in order x2 pages include x12 number bonds (to 5) questions to complete in ‘order’, with answers. Page 1 has been designed to be a ‘cut and stick’ missing numbers activity, however missing numbers can be written in the empty boxes instead, either works. The answers are clearly presented in the same layout on page 2. The number bonds in boxes are listed in this order: 0 + 5 1 + 4 2 + 3 3 + 2 4 + 1 5 + 0 5 + 0 4 + 1 3 + 2 2 + 3 1 + 4 0 + 5 Page 2 could be used as a reference resource for display Resource 2 - in random order x2 pages include x12 number bonds (to 5) questions to complete in ‘random order’, with answers. Page 1 has been designed to be a ‘cut and stick’ missing numbers activity, however missing numbers can be written in the empty boxes instead, either works. The answers are clearly presented in the same layout on page 2. The number bonds in boxes are listed in this order: 2 + 3 5 + 0 1 + 4 3 + 2 0 + 5 4 + 1 3 + 2 0 + 5 4 + 1 2 + 3 5 + 0 1 + 4 Page 2 could be used as a reference resource for display Recommendations These PDFs have been designed to print and use as practical write-on resource, they could also be laminated to enable reuse. 2D shapes for window display

(0)
What’s included? This pdf download includes x5 landscape orientation sheets featuring x23 2D Shapes with clear step by step instructions to create colourful acetate/cellophane 2D shapes for (window) display. What’s it for? These 2D shapes have been designed to install and sense of awe and wonder - the shapes look so beautiful when the sun shines through them and where the colour ‘falls’ depends on the position of the shape in relation to the sun which changes as the sun’s position changes. The set gives an opportunity to showcase the whole set of 2D shapes together as a focus to encourage learners to recognise and name each 2D shape and become familiar with recognising and naming them as well as lots of exposure and so time to count the number of sides/corners and think about the properties of each e.g. which have straight/curved sides (or both!). The 2D shapes can of course be repositioned and displayed as you choose. I have included a ‘2D shapes’ label to be displayed with the set of shapes. This resource would also support work on shadows and light/dark. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students who would appreciate a pop of colour shining through these shapes when the sun comes out! Resource Details The shapes all have a name label which is in the font ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 45. There are x5 pages. The first page includes clear instructions and the remaining pages include the set of shapes and 2D Shapes word label. Suggestions I recommend printing and making these letters out of white card - paper would be too flimsy and see-through so not effective. A set of coloured acetate/cellophane sheets is needed to make these - these are quite inexpensive on Amazon(!) I recommend also backing every 2D shape in white card so that the coloured acetate/cellophane is concealed - this looks so much nicer on the window and makes each letter stronger however is twice the work and time and to do this x10 sheets of A4 white card will be needed (instead of x5 sheets). 2D Shapes Investigation Workbook

What’s included? This download includes five A4, portrait pdf sheets to investigate ‘2D shapes and their properties’, presented as a ‘workbook’ for learners to complete through investigation. A sixth sheet has also been included as a set of tangible 2D shapes for learners to hold and investigate while completing this investigation. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children (to complete with support/as a group), pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details The six 2D shapes investigated in this workbook are a circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon and hexagon. Page 1 is the ‘workbook’ cover and includes a clear space for learners to write their name. There is related 2D shape information included on the cover for learners to read as well as a visual list of what learners will need to complete the workbook - to encourage autonomy. Pages 2 and 3 include six sets of questions (one set for each shape) all in the same layout. Learners are to complete this information so that the information becomes a set of clear, (accurate!) facts about each shape. Where learners do not know the information (to complete these questions) they can investigate each shape using the clear picture provided and count e.g. the number of sides of each shape and ‘circle’ the corners/vertices to complete the information. Additionally I have included a set of these 2D shapes to print out (onto card) and hold and use during this investigation. To complete these pages there are ‘2D shape names’ to cut out on page 4 (along the right hand side) which learners should be made aware of (dotted lines indicate where to cut). An adult could pre-cut these x6 shape names for those learners who struggle with using scissors/find cutting frustrating/demotivating. Pages 4 and 5 include the same information (as pages 1 and 2) completed in the same layout for learners to check their findings. There are also some ‘quick match’ questions at the very end of page 5 to recap what they have learnt. Page 6 a seperate set of these 2D shapes to print out onto card and (ideally) laminate to hold and use while completing this investigation.
